Commentary on the Book of Psalms II and III

08/18 – 06/22

This project consists of producing a critical commentary on the Book of Psalms. It includes the translations of the psalms from Hebrew and Greek (Septuagint), philological and text-critical notes to each translation, modern critical commentary, rabbinic commentary, patristic commentary, commentary of classical spirituality of individual verses and expressions; analyses of the form, the genre, and the structure of each psalm, and its theological, liturgical, and pastoral application. The outcome of this project will be applicable in schools with theological and religious programs as an educational tool, in churches and religious institutions for spiritual and cultural enrichment, and also as a resource material for the studies of Semitic languages, classical and Slovak philology, ancient and middle ages history, philosophy and theology.

Realities of Ancient Culture as a Part of the Preparation of Students of Translatology

The project focuses on practical research into Ancient culture. Its main objective is to analyze the means and ways of using cultural references in the original and the translations, by the students Reálie z antickej kultúry ako súčasť prípravy študentov translatologických odborov 3/21 Identifikátor: 20190424101257710 in Translation studies. The project is a follow-up to the research whose findings have shown that the gradual reduction or elimination of the course Latin Language has a long-term effect, i.e. the absence of knowledge pertaining to Ancient civilizations, thus reducing the quality of the translation. Our premise is that this deficit can be addressed by means of an exercise book. The textbook should grant students in Translation studies practical experience in dealing with the Ancient culture references. It will further teach them how these references are represented in the target language and what are the common mistakes the language users make. Practice shows that self-study of the Ancient culture reduces the problem partially; since the users gain information mostly after the problem occurred. Our solution is to propose a more systematic way of increasing the knowledge base of the students in Translation studies. It means their involvement in the active study of the Ancient culture that would provide them with profession specific skills. We consider as one such tool an exercise book and an e-learning course in Moodle. Their use, exercises and analyses of selected texts etc., increase the likelihood that the students will retain the acquired information in the long-term memory, but not only that - they will broaden their active vocabulary or, overall, the ability to identify and include into their translation the references to Ancient culture.

Poemata de se ipso of Gregory of Nazianzus

The poetry of Gregory of Nazianzus (4th cent. CE) is considered traditionally classified into two main areas, theological (poemata theologica) and historical (poemata historica). In spite of being a valuable asset for the world today, and in spite of the undeniable place of this poetry in the European cultural tradition, only a negligible part of Gregory’s poetry has been published so far. Considering translations into Slovak language, there are few theological poems from the Poemata moralia and the historical Poemata quae spectant ad alios that are in fact

letters addressed to Gregory’s friends and acquaintances. Of the historical poems Poemata de se ipso are thematically different from the rest since they are autobiographical and portray personal opinions. They are going to be the focus of our research. The main project output will be a scientific monograph containing commented translation of the original texts. The scope of such a project and its execution demand cooperation of various scientific fields.

Returning to the Narration of Ancient Myths in Education: The Podcast as an Effective Medium for the Spoken Myth

The project aims to use podcasts as a unique distribution platform with considerable potential for quality education, the popularization of ancient culture, particularly Greek mythology, and its subsequent integration into the educational process, especially at universities but also at secondary schools. Within an interdisciplinary research framework, the project seeks to expand younger generations’ knowledge of classical Greek mythology in an engaging way, with an emphasis on the interpretation of myths and the relevance of individual mythical narratives to the contemporary world. This will contribute to a better understanding of individual behaviour and, in a broader context, of the social and cultural norms of contemporary society.

In addition to a planned series of 30 podcasts, the project will produce a textbook on ancient mythology, addressing an existing gap in this field in Slovakia. Although the textbook will primarily reflect the needs and requirements of university programmes in which ancient mythology is taught either as a major or supplementary subject, it will also be accessible to a wider group of university and secondary-school teachers and students. Together with the podcast episodes, it will thus be applicable in educational and psychological practice. At the same time, it will serve as a modern and practical guide to the world of ancient myths, helping contemporary readers to better understand themselves and the functioning of the world around them.

The project will also produce publicly accessible, interactive online mythology-themed tests, reaching a broad user base. An integral part of the project will be the presentation of research findings related to the topic at scientific and professional events both in Slovakia and abroad.

Laus urbis – Forms of the Praise of the City in Neo-Latin Literature of Slovak Provenance

The origins of the genre laus urbis (laudatio urbis, encomium urbis, laus civitatis, ἐγκώμιον πόλεως), i.e. the “praise of the city” (a subgenre of epideictic literature), date back to antiquity. Its literary form was already shaped in rhetorical treatises that demonstrated ways in which praise (panegyric, encomium) could be applied to a city, including the topoi that such a laus should contain, ranging from praise of the city’s location to praise of the cultivation of learning and the arts.

Neo-Latin literature of Slovak provenance also contains literary works corresponding to this definition. Since, among works displaying the characteristics of laus urbis, Slovak literary scholarship has so far devoted detailed attention only to Rakovský’s poetic composition on the city of Louny, while the genre itself has not yet been systematically researched, the project aims to map Neo-Latin literary works of this kind produced by authors of Slovak origin, as well as by authors with connections to Slovakia; to analyse these works; to make them accessible to both the scholarly community and the wider public through translations; and thus to provide an overview of the forms taken by the “praise of the city” in Slovak Neo-Latin literature.
