Selected projects

Project Title: Languages in Tyrol – Survey of "Old" and "New" Multilingualism in the State of Tyrol – Pilot Study Project Duration: 10/2021–09/2023 Role in the Project: Project Leader Project Summary: In contemporary research, multilingualism is no longer perceived as a problem but is regarded as a highly effective and positive factor for individual and societal development. However, it is essential to consider the diverse manifestations of internal and external multilingualism, which have always existed, as well as "new" multilingualism arising from migration, and to interlink them. The pilot study aims to provide more precise information about the actual linguistic landscape in the state of Tyrol and serve as a basis for future educational planning. Key Output: Meier, Jörg (Ed.) (2023): Internal and External Multilingualism in Europe. (European Contributions to Applied German Studies 6). Berlin: Weidler [in preparation]. |
Project Title: Digital Humanities and Didactics – The Relevance of Digital Source Collections for Teaching and Research Project Duration: 01/2021–03/2023 Role in the Project: Project Leader Project Summary: The main objective of the project is to determine the relevance of digital collections of primary texts for teaching and research in primary, secondary, and tertiary education. To this end, surveys were conducted in various schools and universities (in Germany, Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Poland) to examine the current state, knowledge, and interest in this field. For meaningful use of digitized materials and their sustainability, it is important not only to consider the "number of visits" to websites but also to conduct "accompanying research" using questionnaires. Key Output: Online platform "Language and School" Meier, Jörg (2023): Cyberbullying. Background and Studies. Information and Materials for Teaching. (Contributions to Subject Didactics 7). Vienna [in preparation]. |
Project Title: Populist Election Campaigns in Comparison: Czech Republic – Austria – Germany Project Duration: 01/2020–03/2022 Role in the Project: Researcher Project Summary: The project examines the phenomenon of populism, which has played an increasingly significant role in politics in recent years. The research focuses on election campaigns, specifically comparing Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany. The objective is to identify similarities and differences in the use of language for political advertising purposes. The findings are intended to be didactically processed and presented in a textbook on the language of populist campaigns. Key Output: Workshop "Specifics of Right-Wing Populist Language" Meier, Jörg / Schuppener, Georg (2022): Populist Election Campaigns in Comparison. The Term "Heimat" in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. (European Contributions to Applied German Studies 2). Berlin: Weidler [in press]. |
Project Title: Professional Writing – Advising and Supporting Writing Processes – Establishing Writing Workshops Project Duration: 10/2016–09/2021 Role in the Project: Project Leader Project Summary: The aim of the project is to support students and academic staff in individual or group writing processes for scientific, professional, and personal projects. Workshops and seminars with various didactic and academic focuses were organized for this purpose. As a next step, a writing center was established at the University of Teacher Education Tyrol (Pädagogische Hochschule Tirol). Key Output: Meier, Jörg (Ed.) (2021): Writing in the Classroom. (Contributions to Subject Didactics 3). Vienna. |
Project Registration Number: APVV-21-0485, Slovak Research and Development Agency (Ministry of Education, Science, Research, and Sport of the Slovak Republic) Project Title: Verba volant scripta manent. Words fly away, written ones remain. Karpathen-Post as a Source of Regional History, Language, and Culture in Spiš at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Century Project Duration: 07/2022–12/2025 Role in the Project: Researcher Project Summary: The project aims to capture the multiethnic context of the Spiš region and its inhabitants at the turn of the 19th and 20th century through the lens of sociolinguistic and sociocultural analysis of the periodical Karpathen Post, with a particular focus on the German language and culture. It incorporates the latest theoretical and methodological approaches offered by the science of mass media communication. Based on the findings, the project pursues two fundamental parallel lines – sociocultural and sociolinguistic – which will complement each other and culminate in a comprehensive analysis of the Karpathen Post within the framework of media studies, with a focus on the detailed examination of the media environment in which the periodical was published during that period. |
