Grant scheme: VEGA Scientific Grant Agency of the Ministry of Education, science, research and sport of the Slovak Republic and the Slovak Academy of Sciences, registration number 1/0407/17 Project title: Slovak Poetry in English Book Translations Implementation period: 01/17 - 12/20 Position: principal investigator The main aim of the project was to map, analyse and evaluate accessible English book translations of Slovak poetry from the early 19th century to the present times. Its principal output was the monograph Slovak Poetry in English Book Translations, divided into two parts: the first one sums up anthologies, the second one deas with translations of individual authors. In addition to a systematic survey of English translations of Slovak poetry, it provides the assessment of particular translational methods and procedures based on a detailed comparison of selected originals and their translations. It shows that the picture of Slovak poetry in the English speaking world was largely influenced both by external circumstances (polity, the status of Slovak, ideological pressure) and individual dispositions of editors and translators. At the same time it indicates that the slow journey of Slovak poetry into anglophone world, often by way of translations from a bridge language, has gained on volume and quantity in recent decades. |
Grant scheme: KEGA Cultural and Educational Agency, registration number 014UPJŠ-4/2021 Project title: Translation and Reception of Rhytmical Poetry as a Generational Problem Implementation period: 01/2021 - 12/2023 Position: principal investigator The aim of the project is to stimulate or raise the interest of students of philology to in translation of what is called rhythmical poetry (metrically organised and mostly rhymed) that creates the basis of world poetic heritage from the earliest times till today. Rapid decline in the number of translators of rhythmical poetry in last decades in Slovakia provokes apprehension that soon there will be nobody to translate it. It is in sharp contrast to the fact that still there is a number of works of that kind that have not been translated in Slovak at all. This project is suppesed to be one of attempts to reverse this unfavourable situation by its orientation to a young generation university students of philology with good language skills and literary talent. It is true that translation of rhythmical poetry is generally considered to be the most difficult, which can possibly discourage prospective young translators, however, that is precisely why we should draw them in by way of our experience and contacts. This is to be carried out by various activities like lectures of translators or theorists, chats with translators, scholars or poets, workshop oriented on translation of rhythmical poetry, patricipation of students in translation competitions, or a web platform to share one‘s experience in translating rhythmical poetry. |
Grant scheme: KEGA Cultural and Educational Agency, registration number 022UPJŠ-4/2017 Project title: Language and Literature in Contemporary Socio-Cultural and Medial Context Implementation period: 01/17 - 12/19 Position: member of research team The project was oriented on extension, completion and integration of the curriculum for students of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd level of university studies of Slovak language and literature and massmedia studies as well by way of non-traditional forms of presentation of language and culture as a socio-cultural phenomenom. The plan was to introduce linguistic, literary and medial issues in a broader context - both as a historical nad cultural heritage and as a topical and dynamical phenomenon, whereas all these phenomena can be learned in mutual live interaction. Various forms were used to this kind of introduction and completion of the curriculum of teaching Slovak language and literature, and massmedia communication - chats with authors, literary excursions, excursion tours on particular places in Slovakia related to notable persons related to language, literature and culture, workshops aimed at writing various kinds of messages (from literature, journalistic genres to websites) and interactive co-operation with distinguished contemporary artists, lectures of prominent figures not only from linguistics, literature and media art, but also from other fields of art and culture. All these activities can add to deeper understaning of the national cultural heritage of Slovakia in broader (transnational) context, too and at the same time encourage students to seek active and intergrating perception of language, literature as a live part of philologically oriented studies. |
Grant scheme: APVV-16-0035 Slovak Research and Development Agency, registration number APVV-20-0179 Project title: Interactive hypertext lexicon of literary studies with a corpus of key literary studies texts Implementation period: 07/21 - 06/25 Position: member of research team The main aim of the project is the creation of an interactive lexicon of literary studies terms in hypertext format together with a corpus of texts from the said field. The project follows up on the work on the electronic Hyperlexicon of Concepts and Categories in Literary Studies which was created in two VEGA research projects. The updated and expanded Hyperlexicon will adopt new content-related and functional elements. In terms of function, the work will be more interactive and open; in terms of content, the Hyperlexicon will now include important texts which in their time helped spearhead new modes of thinking or even whole new paradigms. However, the hypertextuality of the lexicon will still be retained. The experts who will author the new entries will not only summarize the current body of knowledge but also conduct their own research and other related publication activities in accordance with the aims of the project to provide even more up to date findings on the subject matter. We are convinced that such a broad and synthesizing collaborative endeavor must be rooted in basic research. As of today, Slovak literary scholars do not have access to a dictionary that would summarize the state of the art knowledge in the field in a broad manner and across individual philological specialization and would be fully available to them online. |
