Selected projects

Project title: Onomatopoeia - what is in the name?

Implementation period: 07/2020-06/2024

Position: researcher

Project outline: The project aims to map various theoretical approaches to the concept of onomatopoeia and describe onomatopoeia in 90 languages of the world. The theoretical facet of the project concentrates on the following main areas: (i) place of onomatopoeia in the lexicon; (ii) the relation between onomatopoeia and interjections; (iii) the relation between onomatopoeia versus ideophones; 12. 3. 2022 13:26 vskDokument-Körtvélyessy_VUPCH_EN (2).html file:///C:/Users/Lívia Kortvélyessy/Downloads/vskDokument-Körtvélyessy_VUPCH_EN (2).html 11/12 (iv) the role of sound symbolism in onomatopoeia; (v) the diachronic perspective of onomatopoeia; (vi) the role of onomatopoeia in language acquisition; and (vii) the role of onomatopoeia in sign languages. The empirical part of the project pursues the mapping of phonological, morphological, word-formation, syntactic, and semantic characteristics of onomatopoeia in 90 languages of the world, their analysis, and typological evaluation.

Project title: Research into extra-linguistic factors of word-formation and word-interpretation

Implementation period: 07/2017-06/2021

Position: principle investigator

Project outline: There are many ways in which we, as speakers, are creative in how we form and interpret new words. Working across the interfaces of psychology, linguistics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics, this book presents cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, showing how we manipulate the range of linguistic tools at our disposal to create an infinite range of words and meanings. It provides both a theoretical account of creativity in word-formation and word-interpretation, and an experimental framework with the corresponding results obtained from more than seven hundred participants. Data drawn from this vast range of speakers shows how creativity varies across gender and age, and demonstrates the complexity of relationships between the examined variables. Pioneering in its scope, this volume will pave the way for a brand new area of research in the formation and interpretation of complex words.

Project title: Derivational networks. Cross-linguistic research

Implementation period: 01/2017-12/2019

Position: researcher

Project outline: This monograph examines derivational networks in 40 European languages. It combines a new theoretical perspective on the complexity of derivational processes in various languages and of the examination of their typological characteristics. For that purpose, a new methodological approach has been introduced, including a number of parameters: the saturation value, maximum derivational capacity, the maximum and the average number of orders of derivation, and typical combinations of semantic categories and their blocking effects.
