Prof. PaedDr. Štefan Šutaj, DrSc. is a professor of Slovak history at the Department of History, Faculty of Arts, UPJŠ in Košice. He is an emeritus researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences - Center for Social and Psychological Sciences of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He deals with the issue of national minorities, national politics, political parties and regional history of Košice in the 20th and early 21st century, in the context of the history of Central Europe. He tries to mediate this issue to students within the framework of his pedagogical activities. He has been the solver of several APVV projects, VEGA, and participates in scientific projects with partners abroad.

Brief characteristics of the project:

The aim of the project will be the analysis of development of national relations in the years 2004 – 2014 with impact on: political strategy of the state in the ethnicity area; aims and intentions of political parties in the area; ethno-demography and main trends in the 21-st century; cooperation the EU and Slovakia on the institutional level in regulation of the politics; relevant aspects of the governmental politics in the analysed time period; perception of the history of ethnic minorities; contents of historical memory with accent on the historical events with ethnic background (majority-minority relations, Slovak – Hungarian relations, Ruthenian – Ukrainian relations, the Roma problem...) The integral part is the interdisciplinary empirical research will be focused on basic theoretical, methodological, and practical questions of ethnicity and ethnic relations, with maintaining (for the comparability reasons) the procedure used in the research done in the year 2004 in the project “Nations, nationalities, and ethnic groups in the process of transformation of the Slovakian society”.

The project deals with one of the important aspects of Czechoslovak-Hungarian relations, the population exchange between Czechoslovakia and Hungary. It builds on previous researches in this field and aims to realize extensive and consistent research into the issue and to obtain comprehensive statistical data of population exchange issue and to evaluate them in historical contexts in Czechoslovak, Slovak and foreign policy.

The project, following on from the project Places of Memory Košice I. (historical turning points and institutions), dealt with the issue of the influence of important and less important persons on the history of Košice. At the same time, he monitored Košice as a space for the activities of important personalities who influenced the development in the Central European region.
