regional history, language and culture in Spiš at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries

Project implementation period: 2021-2025

Brief description of the project: The aim of the project is to capture the multi-ethnic context of the Spiš region and

its inhabitants at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries against the background of the sociolinguistic and sociocultural

analysis of the periodical Karpathen Post, with the main emphasis on the German language and culture, while we will

rely on the latest theoretical and methodological starting points – as offered by the science of mass media

communication. Based on the knowledge gained in this way, the presented project follows two basic parallel lines -

sociocultural and sociolinguistic, which will complement each other and result in a comprehensive analysis of the

Karpathen Post newspaper against the background of mass media studies with a view to a rigorous analysis of the

media environment in which the periodical at the turn of the 19th and 20th century was published.
