Selected projects

Micro- and macrovascular complications of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents. This project comprises assessment of the epidemiology of and risk factors for microangiopathy and macroangiopathy. Special investigations are applied for neuropathy with cardiovascular reflex testing and quantitative sensory nerve testing by current perception threshold measurements. Macroangiopathy is assessed by cerebral blood flow measurement using transcranial Doppler-ultrasonography.

Cardiovascular risk factors in childhood obesity and metabolic syndrome. This project is dealing with detection of early signs of cardiovascular consequences of obesity and metabolic syndrome using endocrine and metabolic markers, specifically insulin resistance in parallel with morphology assessments by ultrasonography (cardio-echo, IMT measure). There is a special interest in understanding childhood risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases and the possible preventive measures.

Artificial pancreas - RD to develop control algorhythm for closed loop system in type 1 diabetes. The project is addressing the development of special robust algorhythm for insulin delivery by portable insulin pump using real-time glucose monitoring data. Special objective is to elaborate appropriate models for avoiding metabolic derangement during and after vigorous exercise. With this regard new algorhythms are tested in special clinical and real world circumstances.

Epidemiology of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in youths. The project is assessing population based incidence and prevalence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes below the age 18 years using health insurance data base analyses. Long term analysis permits to look at temporal changes and trends for childhood diabetes in a specific population and country and provide assistance to create appropriate health care plan. Moreover, long- term mortality and morbidity data are also obtained in patients having childhood onset diabetes.

Physical fitness and quality of life of children with type 1 diabetes. This project investigates the bi-directional relationship between physical fitness and blood glucose control and attempts to characterize the role of physical exercise in the treatment. In other aspect, extensive investigation is carried out to assess quality of life of patients and parents and the resilience with regard illness. In these projects, internationally standardized specific tools are used for quantification of physical fitness and quality of life according to different age groups
