Assoc. Prof. Matej Škorvánek, MD, PhD. holds currently a position of Associated Professor and Head of Centre for rare movement disorders at Department of Neurology, LF UPJŠ and UNLP in Košice, Slovakia. He received his PhD title in 2014 at the University of Groningen, Netherlands, and became Associated Professor in 2018. During his specialization he attended study stays at universities in Prague, UCL in London, Groningen and Vienna. He has been a principal investigator or co-investigator of APVV, VEGA, COST, CEVA, IPDMS, IBM and ERDF grants. At present, he is a supervisor of 4 internal and 2 external PhD students with focus on movement disorders. He is the current chair of the Movement Disorders Section of the Slovak Neurological Society and a member of the Executive Committee of the Slovak Neurological Society, chair of the MDS European section educational committee, chair of the MDS Clinical Outcome Assessments Scientific Evaluation Committee, as well as other national and international working groups and committees (see section Others). He is the chair of 7 European congresses officially organized, supported or endorsed by the MDS. He has received domestic and foreign awards for his previous scientific work, including awards Personality of Science and Technology under 35 years for 2018 (awarded by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic), the Guoth Prize for 2018 (awarded by the Slovak Medical Society for the extraordinary achievements of a physician under 38 years) as well as the prestigious MDS LEAP in 2015 (Leadership program for young movement disorder neurologists). He is currently coordinating several national and international multicentre projects focusing on non-motor, prodromal and genetic aspects of Parkinson's disease. These include the Quality of Life in Parkinson's Disease – QUALPD study, the Central European Group on Genetics of Movement Disorders - CEGEMOD and the PARCAS and PDBIOM studies to identify new biomarkers of prodromal Parkinson's disease (participation in other projects and collaborations below). His major clinical and research interest is also related to early diagnostics of rare hereditary hyperkinetic movement disorders, especially dystonia.
