Prof. MVDr. Monika Halánová, PhD. is a professor of epidemiology and the Head of the Department of Epidemiology at the Faculty of Medicine, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. She currently also serves as the Vice-Rector for Academic Qualifications and Doctoral Studies at UPJŠ in Košice. Alongside her teaching activities, her scientific research focuses primarily on the epidemiology of infectious diseases. She has completed study stays in several laboratories specializing in the diagnostics of infectious and parasitic diseases. She is involved in designing and preparing curricula for medical students in the fields of epidemiology and public health. She is the person responsible for the study program and the chair of the Study Program Board for Epidemiology in the field of General Medicine, 3rd level of study, and a member of four other doctoral study program boards. She has supervised 15 PhD students (9 successfully completed) and has served as a specialist supervisor for 3 graduates. She has played a significant role in solving research grant projects and has so far been the principal investigator, deputy principal investigator, or research collaborator on 30 scientific research projects (mainly VEGA, KEGA, but also APVV, Horizon 2020, and EU projects), primarily focused on the epidemiology of infectious diseases. In 2020, she became the national coordinator of the project “DisCoVery within EU-RESPONSE”, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. She also led the working group representing the UPJŠ Faculty of Medicine, Slovakia, involved in developing the new international study program MSc in Migrant Health: Addressing New Challenges in Europe. To date, she has published 453 scientific and professional works (88 of them in journals indexed in Web of Science and Scopus), with 928 citations (H-index = 17, according to Web of Science). During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led an accredited laboratory for COVID-19 diagnostics.
