The main area of his scientific work is the study of the influence of xenobiotics of natural origin on angiogenesis, proteins involved in spatial organization and adhesiveness, as well as the ability to modulate the size and properties of resistant, so-called side population of cancer cells. He also studies the influence of BCRP transport protein polymorphisms and hypoxia on the accumulation of hypericin, focusing mainly on the mechanism of regulation of ABC transport proteins. In the past, he was the responsible researcher of 2 projects of the Cancer Research Foundation, co-researcher of 7 VEGA projects, 4 APVV projects and a member of the top team "Bioaktiv". He was a consultant to 5 completed doctoral students in the Molecular Cytology study program and a supervisor of 10 diploma and 14 bachelor's theses. Currently, he is a member of the union committee of the bachelor's study in the field of Biology and doctoral studies in the field of Molecular Cytology and Genetics at the Faculty of Science UPJŠ in Košice, deputy project manager of the VEGA project and supervisor of 3 doctoral students, 1 graduate and 1 bachelor.

Projects
■■■ Project title: Open scientific community for modern interdisciplinary research in medicine (OPENMED, ITMS2014+: 313011V455), co-investigator of the project The aim of the project is to solve selected problems of diagnosis and treatment of oncological, cardiovascular and viral diseases, CNS diseases and diseases of the musculoskeletal system with a unique use of the potential of the partners in the project. One of the main aims of the project is to examine the response of cancer stem cells to both the conventional form of therapy (depending on the nature of the tumour) and selected types of chemotherapeutics that will be transported by DNA/RNA nanoparticles to achieve a synergistic effect. ■■■ Project title: Changes in the regulation of BCRP transport protein expression and activity in relation to the proangiogenic and metastatic potential of cancer cells (VEGA 1/0003/23), co-investigator of the project, deputy project manager. The goal of proposed project is to reveal the mechanisms of BCRP regulation in cancer cells after hypericin action and to verify their involvement in the angiogenesis and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms of resistance can help to increase the effectiveness of therapeutic approaches in oncology. ■■■ Project title: Novel anthraquinones from natural sources for biomedical applications (APVV-18-0125), co-investigator of the project The main objectives of this project are to contribute to the knowledge on regulation of biosynthesis of the studied anthraquinones based on genomic/transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses and bring more understanding to the crosstalk between the endophytic microorganisms and their plant hosts with perspective of their biotechnological production; to determine (anti)genotoxic, eventually DNA-protective effect and influence on cell cycle dynamics and antioxidant properties of the studied compounds and to accomplish a pilot study of their cytotoxic effect on cancer cell lines and avian embryo chorioallantoic membranes and modulation effect on interactions between cancer and immune cells with perspective use in anticancer therapy. ■■■ Project title: Hypoxia and polymorphism of BCRP transporter as the factors affecting hypericin accumulation and efficiency in vitro and ex ovo (VEGA 1/0022/19), co-investigator of the project, deputy project manager. The presented project is focused on specification of the negative prognostic marker for the application of hypericin in (anticancer) photodynamic therapy or photodynamic diagnosis. The main objectives of project are to specify the mutations in ABCG2 gene resulting in amino acid substitutions in BCRP protein and to determine the effect of non-photoactivated hypericin under hypoxic conditions on the level and activity of ABC transporters, and the incidence of putative cancer stem cells. The third aim of the project is to find out if non-photoactivated hypericin can inhibit the selected proangiogenic factors of tumours formed on chorioallantoic membrane.
