Selected projects

APVV-20-0576 Green ambitions for the sustainable development (European green deal in the context of the International and Municipal law), 8/2021-12/2024, principal investigator

In the context of climate change as one of the biggest challenges of humankind, the effort of international community is focused on the development of tools directed to the achievement of the climate neutrality and the protection of biodiversity, such as the European Green deal. The achievement of the Deal´s objectives will be affected by the interaction with the system of the public international law as well as national law. Accordingly, it is necessary to evaluate the coherence of the European Green Deal with different fields of law (for example Environmental Law, human rights, investment law, law of international organisations, law of armed conflict, private international law), that deal with the protection of environment, climate and biodiversity across different systems of law. Analysis of this multilevel interaction can identify the areas of law, in which legal changes are necessary for the proper achievement of the European Green Deal objectives. For the adequate research within such a wide topic, well balanced research team of interdisciplinary character (public international law, private international law, administrative law, physicochemical sciences) and international character (Slovakia and Slovenia) is essential. The outcome of the research will have a complex character and will be useful for the legal theory and practice.

VEGA č. 1/0643/20 Legal and Ethical Perpective of Artificial Intelligence, 1/2020-12/2022, principal investigator

International community faces the so-called the fourth industrial revolution based on development and use of the artificial intelligence. Will application of already existing rules of International law of general character (for example the rules of international liability) be enough or is it necessary to create new set of rules reacting specifically on the development and use of the artificial intelligence? Basic aim of the project is the research of the various fields of the International law as well as the law of EU in the relation to the selected aspects of artificial intelligence, for example legal personality of robots, ethical standards within the use of robots, etc.  According to this research, the research teams will be able to answer the question, is current international law capable to respond to the new challenges posed by the use of artificial intelligence and also to present de lege ferenda proposals of new legal regulation of this area in conditions of the Slovak republic.

VEGA č. 1/0709/16 Place and Significance of Regional Judicial Bodies Context of the Contemporary Regionalism, 01/2016-12/2018, principal investigator

It is prevailing trend within contemporary regionalism which became geographically extensive, that within the structure of regional organizations and looser international cooperative institutions (with some exceptions such as ASEAN), the judicial organ is corporated as the part of their peaceful dispute settlement systems (Court of Justice of the EU, EFTA Court, BENELUX Court of Justice, European Court of Human Rights, Interamerican Court of Human Rights, African Court on Human and Peoples´ Rights, ECOWAS Community Court of Justice etc.). Creation of such tribunals is part of the process of judicialization of general international law, which is a phenomenon of the last 25 years of past century and overlaps to recent time. The aim of this project is to bring an analysis of a place and significance of regional judicial bodies within contemporary institutional regionalism.
