Selected projects

VEGA 1/0193/18 "Environmentalisation of Public International Law", 01/2018 – 12/2021, principal investigator

Protection of environment has regarding the existing serious ecological problems emerged as one of key issues in International Public Law. The research collective will within the context of the project carry out several levels of research. Special emphasis will be paid to the development of international environmental law, legal regulation of the EU in the sphere of environmental human rights including the right to water, changes and protection of climate, protection of biodiversity, protection of watercourses, security aspects of environmental degradation (including armed conflicts for scarce resources and conduct of ecological warfare), the question of ecological migrants, responsibility and enforcement of norms of international and European environmental law. At the same time the project will also focus on interactions of international and European environmental law with environmental legal norms of Slovakia and will propose legislative changes in areas of insufficient legal regulation.

VEGA 1/0200/18 "Current issues of asylum law in the Slovak Republic - legal regulation and legal practice", 01/2018-12/2020, co-worker

The Slovak Republic, as a member state of the European Union and a party to the UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, has obligations in relation to the rights of aliens who apply for asylum in its territory. The Common European Asylum System stipulates regulatory requirements and application practice in line with the requirements of European legislation and European court decisions. At the same time, however, the realization of the right to asylum, guaranteed by the Constitution of the Slovak Republic, must reflect the sovereignty and interests of the Slovak Republic. The issue also includes the legal regulation of the rights and obligations of asylum seekers, their administrative detention and deportation, administrative powers and criminal liability, and requirements for the quality of decision-making of the relevant public administration bodies in proceedings where the asylum seeker is the subject of proceedings. The research team will examine the issues of international and European legislation, focusing on the assessment of the transposition of European asylum law into the Slovak legal system and the analysis of application practice and decision-making activities of the courts of the Slovak Republic.

VEGA 1/0635/2 "State citizenship in the light of international and European legal principles and standards", 01/2022-12/2025, co-worker

State citizenship is primarily an institution of national law, defined as a permanent legal relationship between a natural person and the state, the content of which are mutual rights and obligations established by the legal order of the given state. International law as well as EU law also have significant legal implications in this area and therefore the goal of the grant is a comprehensive analysis of international, European and Slovak legislation. of citizenship, their mutual interaction and identification of application problems. An important part will also be an analysis of the jurisprudence of international, European, and national judicial bodies in issues related to citizenship and a comparison of selected specifics of national citizenship regulations of representatively selected states.

APVV-20-0576 “Green challenges for sustainable development (European Green Deal in the context of international and domestic law)”, co-worker

The main objective of the mentioned project is focused on the coherence of the objectives of the European Green Deal with existing legal instruments of public international law aimed at environmental protection, climate neutrality and biodiversity conservation. The aim of the European Green Deal is to transform all sectors of the economy towards sustainable development with the lowest possible impact on

the environment and the climate. The plan of measures to ensure the transformation includes, in addition to allocating the necessary funding, specific measures to ensure clean and circular economy, and in particular measures to halt climate change, maintain biodiversity and reduce pollution..
