VEGA: Artificial Intelligence from the Perspective of Law and Ethics (ID: 1/0643/20). Investigator. The project aims to examine different areas of international law as well as EU law in relation to selected aspects of artificial intelligence, such as subjectivity of robots, ethical standards in their use, derivation of responsibility for their behavior and use of autonomous weapons in times of peace and armed conflict. |
APVV: Green Ambitions for Sustainable Development (European Green Deal) (ID: APVV-20-0576). Investigator. The basic goal of the project task is to assess the coherence of the objectives of the European Green Agreement with existing legal instruments aimed at environmental protection, climate neutrality and biodiversity conservation. The given goals can be examined horizontally and vertically. Horizontal analysis can take place across individual areas of law affected by climate neutrality and biodiversity (environmental law, human rights, the rights of international organizations, investment law, etc.). The vertical analysis assumes that the objectives of the Europe Green Deal need to be examined in terms of their consistency with those of the international community established at United Nations level and, conversely, that the objectives of the Europe Green Deal should be in accordance with national law, namely, Slovak Republic. |

VEGA: 1/0062/25 – Automation of Decision-Making Processes in Public Administration. Researcher. The development of information and communication technologies and their increasing use in everyday life inevitably affect public administration and its decision-making processes. Advances in artificial intelligence also open up broader possibilities for the use of automation in public administration decision-making. Processes that previously had to be carried out by humans can now be performed automatically. However, this requires an adequate legal framework establishing the legal boundaries of such automated decision-making. This research project examines the legal possibilities for automating decision-making processes in public administration in the Slovak Republic. It seeks to identify the obstacles to the use of such tools and to propose legal solutions aimed at eliminating or mitigating the consequences of these obstacles. |

VEGA: 1/0706/26 – The Environmental Dimension of Specific Branches of International Law. Researcher. The rules governing international environmental protection are extensive, form part of almost every specific branch of public international law, and are becoming increasingly important in the practice of States. A growing number of disputes arise in an environmental context. Violations of international environmental law, as well as internationally lawful activities involving environmental risks, frequently give rise to the responsibility or liability of subjects of international law. Against this background, the project focuses on the legal regulation and practical application of the environmental dimensions of specific branches of public international law and their interaction with international environmental law as an emerging, and arguably already established, distinct branch of public international law. |
VVGS-ESGV: VVGS-2023-294: Technological Progress and International Human Rights Law. Principal Investigator. The main objective of the project is to address the following questions: (1) Is the application of the existing rules of international human rights law sufficient, or is it necessary to develop a new set of rules specifically addressing the development and use of artificial intelligence? and (2) Is it necessary to establish new international mechanisms for the protection of human rights in the context of the development and use of artificial intelligence? The need to address these questions stems from the growing impact of AI on the respect for, protection and fulfilment of human rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as from the emergence of new legal challenges in the field under examination. |
